What is CPM?
CPM stands for Cost Per Mille ("mille" means thousand in Latin). It is one of the most common pricing models in digital advertising (used on platforms like Facebook Ads, Google Display Network, and programmatic advertising). It measures the exact cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 impressions (views) of their advertisement.
The Three CPM Formulas
Because the relationship between Cost, Impressions, and CPM is fixed, you can always calculate the third metric if you know the other two. Our calculator handles all three formulas for you automatically:
CPM = (Total Cost ÷ Total Impressions) × 1000Total Cost = (CPM × Total Impressions) ÷ 1000Impressions = (Total Cost ÷ CPM) × 1000Why is CPM Important?
CPM is the foundational metric for brand awareness campaigns. Even if your ultimate goal is conversions or clicks (CPC), understanding your CPM tells you how expensive the advertising real estate is. A high CPM means you are targeting a very competitive or highly specific audience, while a low CPM usually indicates a broad, less competitive audience.
