Target Heart Rate Calculator

Find your exact target heart rate zones to optimize your cardio, burn fat efficiently, and improve cardiovascular endurance.

Understanding Heart Rate Zones

When you exercise, your heart beats faster to pump oxygen to your muscles. Depending on how hard you are working, you will fall into one of five distinct "Training Zones." Training in different zones yields entirely different physiological results.

Zone 2: Fat Burning & Endurance (60-70%)

This is the most critical zone for general health. You should be able to hold a conversation while in Zone 2. Your body relies heavily on fat oxidation for fuel here, making it ideal for weight loss and building an aerobic base.

Zone 3: Aerobic Capacity (70-80%)

Improves cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. Carbohydrates become the primary fuel source. You will be breathing heavily but can still speak in short sentences.

Zone 4: Anaerobic Threshold (80-90%)

This zone improves your body's ability to tolerate and clear lactic acid. Used heavily in interval training (HIIT). You will not be able to speak.

The Karvonen Formula vs. Standard Formula

Our calculator offers two methods for calculating your zones:

  • Standard Formula: Simply multiplies your Max Heart Rate by the zone percentage. This is a good baseline but ignores your current fitness level.
  • Karvonen Formula: Factors in your Resting Heart Rate (RHR) to calculate your Heart Rate Reserve (HRR). Because fitter individuals have lower resting heart rates, this formula provides highly personalized and much more accurate training zones.
