Daily Water Intake Calculator

The "8 glasses a day" rule is a myth. Calculate exactly how much water your specific body needs based on your weight, activity level, and climate.

Why the "8 Glasses a Day" Rule is Wrong

For decades, health authorities pushed the 8x8 rule (eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day). However, this one-size-fits-all approach doesn't make sense. A 250lb athlete living in Arizona needs drastically more water than a 110lb office worker living in Seattle. Your hydration needs are entirely dependent on your body weight, physical activity, and environment.

The Scientific Formula for Hydration

Our calculator uses the standard physiological formula to determine your hydration needs:

  • Base Intake: Take your body weight in pounds and divide it in half. That is your baseline requirement in ounces.
  • Exercise Factor: Add 12 ounces of water for every 30 minutes of exercise.
  • Climate Factor: Add 10% to your total if you live in a hot or dry climate to account for increased sweating.

Signs You Are Not Drinking Enough Water

  • Dark yellow or amber-colored urine (it should be pale yellow)
  • Frequent, dull headaches
  • Dry skin and chapped lips
  • Unexpected fatigue or afternoon "crashes"
  • Muscle cramps during exercise
